Europe-wide data suggest that mortality rates after noncardiac surgery are higher than expected, and vary substantially by country, reports an international research team in The Lancet.
New studies suggest that "[d]eveloping countries with limited access to advanced health-care facilities may be in for a rough ride with swine [H1N1] flu and even countries with high-tech ICUs may find themselves pushed to the limit as their hospitals struggle to save gravely ill H1N1 patients," the Canadian Press reports.
As research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other federal agencies shrinks, cooperation among Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago is expanding.
"Iranian HIV doctor Arash Alaei has been released from jail in Tehran after spending more than three years behind bars for allegedly conspiring against the regime, his U.S.-based brother said Monday," Agence France-Presse reports.
At age 16, Chang Hun Lee was obese. In fact, at 185 pounds, he had already been diagnosed as prediabetic. Fortunately for Lee, he got his health back on track before it was too late. Now the senior at the University of Illinois' Gies College of Business wants to make sure others can be proactive about their health as well.
