Preclinical results of research by City College of New York scientists and TechnoVax, Inc. in animal models demonstrate favorable outcomes in developing a vaccine against the mosquito-borne Zika virus.
According to the World Health Organization, two billion people around the globe suffer from chronic parasitic worm infections, which, in addition to causing illness and developmental delay, are also suspected to interfere with the effectiveness of ordinary vaccines, making their victims more vulnerable to life-threatening diseases. A recent discovery by researchers at the Trudeau Institute promises to bypass these obstacles and help deliver more effective vaccines to these people, boosting their protection against common childhood diseases.
Abbott and Reata Pharmaceuticals today announced that they have entered into a collaboration agreement to develop and commercialize bardoxolone methyl (bardoxolone), which is currently in late Phase 2 trials for the treatment of chronic kidney disease (CKD).
"The past year has underlined how the dramatic growth of some of the world's most populous developing economies is propelling a remarkable shift in the global geopolitics of aid and development," the Guardian reports in an article examining how "non-traditional donors" contributed large amounts to several humanitarian crises this year.
The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine's Professor Chris Curtis has joined the Earth Institute's Professor Jeffrey Sachs to call for the mass distribution of free insecticidal bed nets to replace social marketing as a means of controlling malaria in Africa.
