Meda has signed an agreement to acquire the US specialty pharmaceutical company Alaven. The acquisition will significantly enhance Meda's marketing capabilities in the US and expand the therapeutic focus to include both gastroenterology and women's health; areas that Meda already operates in outside of the US.
The Allen Institute for Brain Science announced today that, given its achievements to date, Paul G. Allen has committed an additional $300 million to the Institute to significantly expand its scientific programs.
While the nation's attention has been focused on state worker battles in union strongholds such as Ohio and Wisconsin, quiet but consequential labor battles are breaking out in Kansas, Texas and other states where collective bargaining rights for public workers were weak or non-existent to begin with. The outcome of these confrontations will have a big impact.
In the current issue of NeuroRehabilitation leading researchers explore the effectiveness of several neurorehabilitation treatments for individuals with brain injury or stroke. A number of published articles have covered the issue of efficacy of neurorehabilitation, but only a few have discussed the issue of effectiveness.
Hospital upgrades with more beds and an expansion of the nursing and medical workforce may be a reality in the near future thanks to the Keneally government's $2.3 billion pitch. Premier Kristina Keneally pledged the total spending package of $4bn would deliver "improvements right across the health system" and give patients the care they needed, promptly. She spoke at the launch at the Children's Hospital at Westmead in Sydney's west saying, "This is about strengthening our health system to deal with challenges of an ageing population, growing levels of chronic disease and rising health costs."
