According to the World Health Organization (WHO), COVID-19 long-haulers are people who experience symptoms such as body ache, fatigue, shortness of breath, headache, difficulty concentrating, loss of taste or smell, or other health issues long after they test negative for the virus. It can be defined as having serious and prolonged symptoms three months after severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection.
Scientists have finally come to a consensus that babies who are breast fed grow up to be more intelligent. A latest study showed that just four weeks on their mothers' milk can have a ‘significant' effect on a child's development in primary and secondary school. These children do better at reading, writing and maths at the ages of five, seven, 11 and 14. It was known till now that breast feeding boosts immunity and helps the children fight ear infections, stomach bugs and even asthma.
People with diabetes could soon have a pain-free way to check their blood glucose levels. Researchers at the University of Missouri–St. Louis have developed a portable, inexpensive non-invasive blood glucose detector. The university has licensed patent rights for the device to St. Louis Medical Devices, Inc., a Missouri company headquartered at UMSL's own startup company incubator – IT Enterprises, to bring the device to market.
Researchers of Valencia's Polytechnic University, have contributed to the development of a new online platform that helps improve the autonomy and self-reliance of people who suffer from Alzheimer's disease in its initial stages.
Many "medical foods" are designed to help manage patients with rare inborn errors of metabolism (IEMs), and can help prevent serious and life-threatening complications. However, such special foods may cause harm in some patients when their use is not carefully monitored and managed, according to a research team led by scientists at the National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI), part of the National Institutes of Health.
