Cerapedics, a privately-held orthobiologics company, announced today the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved the company's Premarket Approval (PMA) application for i-FACTOR™ Peptide Enhanced Bone Graft for use in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) procedures in patients with degenerative cervical disc disease. i-FACTOR bone graft is the first bone graft to be approved for use in the cervical spine and only the second PMA-approved bone graft in the spine.
It looks like bone. It feels like bone. For the most part, it acts like bone. And it came off an inkjet printer. Washington State University researchers have used a 3D printer to create a bone-like material and structure that can be used in orthopedic procedures, dental work, and to deliver medicine for treating osteoporosis. Paired with actual bone, it acts as a scaffold for new bone to grow on and ultimately dissolves with no apparent ill effects.
Pfizer today announced that it has entered into an agreement to acquire Idun Pharmaceuticals, a biopharmaceutical company focused on the discovery and development of therapies to control apoptosis, a process of cell death that occurs in a broad range of diseases.
