In September, patients suffering from multiple sclerosis (MS) received the welcome news that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had approved a promising new drug for their condition called Gilenya. Now, a team from The Scripps Research Institute has discovered that this drug's success may involve an unexpected biological mechanism acting within the central nervous system (CNS). This difference may mean that Gilenya offers even more benefits than previously realized and would represent the first MS therapy with direct CNS activities.
Cardiovascular diseases are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States, accounting for nearly one-third of all deaths. The diseases also create an immense national health economic burden.
Babies who develop leukemia during the first year of life appear to inherit an unfortunate combination of genetic variations that can make the infants highly susceptible to the disease, according to a new study at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the University of Minnesota.
Breast augmentations are the most common form of plastic surgery nationwide, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Loyola University Health System plastic surgeons are seeing similar trends in their practice. The number of women who are getting breast implants also is up from last year. In 2011, 307,180 women nationwide underwent a breast augmentation procedure while 296, 203 women had the same surgery in 2010.
Trimeris, Inc. ("Trimeris") today announced that in connection with the Agreement and Plan of Merger dated October 2, 2009, as amended, by and among Trimeris, Arigene Co., Ltd. and RTM Acquisition Company ("Arigene" and "Purchaser," respectively) (the "Merger Agreement"), Arigene has informed Trimeris through counsel that Arigene intends to terminate the tender offer for all of Trimeris' outstanding shares of common stock because Arigene was unable to secure sufficient financing for purposes of funding the tender offer. The tender offer expired on Monday, December 28, 2009.
