Innovative and potentially game-changing clinical trials to develop new drug regimens to prevent and treat tuberculosis, the second leading global infectious disease killer, are in jeopardy due to federal "sequestration" funding cuts.
Researchers for the first time have induced robust regeneration of nerve tissue connections in injured adult spinal cord sites that control voluntary movement. These findings provide hope that it may be possible to design therapies for paralysis and other impairments of motor function arising from spinal cord injury.
In one study, Boston researchers found that about two-thirds of 1,960 adolescents studied had at least one risk factor for heart disease, and almost 10 percent had a cluster of factors known as metabolic syndrome.
