New research published in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth notes some of the "serious short- and long-term health issues" associated with preterm births and identifies steps that can be taken to reduce the number of stillbirths and premature births worldwide, United Press International reports.
Mindray Medical International Limited, a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer of medical devices worldwide, today announced the introduction of the company's new DP-50 ultrasound system in the United States. The black and white portable unit provides outstanding imaging quality in a compact system and is designed for use in numerous specialty markets.
Minimally invasive surgery is increasingly common and effective for operating inside the human abdomen. In these laparoscopic procedures, which use slender, handheld tools inserted into the body of the patient, the skill of the surgeon is the most important factor determining the success of the operation. A team of interdisciplinary researchers led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has won a $2.3 million federal grant to develop a touch-sensitive virtual reality simulator that will standardize how surgeons are trained and certified to perform laparoscopic procedures.
In a study available on the preprint server medRxiv* researchers aimed to characterize early viral shedding in patients with incident infection. Read more here.
A new study supports the use of a DNA-based "biomarker" blood test as a complement to the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test currently offered to screen men for prostate cancer. University of Cincinnati (UC) researchers report their findings online ahead of print in the British Journal of Cancer.
