Humans face hundreds of decisions every day. But we're not alone. Even the tiniest viruses also make decisions, and scientists are researching how they do so, to help lead to better treatments for some diseases.
The 2009 National Youth Tobacco Survey released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides further evidence that the United States has made dramatic progress in reducing youth smoking, but the rate of decline has slowed significantly in recent years.
The sleep study or test is key for diagnosing apnea-hypopnea syndrome but, given its high cost, few resources are earmarked to it. Computer scientist at the University of the Basque Country, Mr Alfredo Burgos, has presented a thesis that aims to solve this problem.
When a person has a heart attack, portions of the heart muscle die in the next several days or even weeks if deprived of oxygen for long enough. The recovering heart slowly remodels itself, even fostering the growth of new blood vessels, in an attempt to regain some of its former function. But all too often, the remodeling is actually harmful, and the damaged heart is on an inevitable downward slide to heart failure.
On Monday, July 26th, U.S. Rep. Allyson Schwartz, Jim Greenwood, president and CEO of the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO), and Christopher Molineaux, president of Pennsylvania Bio, will host a roundtable discussion on the new Therapeutic Discovery Project Program. This new program offers small biotech companies (less than 250 employees) a tax credit or grant to encourage investment in new medical therapies for life-changing diseases.
