A recent study accepted for publication in The Endocrine Society's Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (JCEM) found that the greater an individual's total muscle mass, the lower the person's risk of having insulin resistance, the major precursor of type 2 diabetes.
An Indiana University study found that HIV care providers in rural Indiana report significant stigma and discrimination in the rural medical referral system surrounding issues of HIV and substance abuse. Providers felt that these factors impeded their ability to offer quality care to their patients.
In patients who had a coronary stent inserted after experiencing the most severe type of heart attack, the use of a technique that measures blood flow and pressure through a partially blocked artery to determine if a second stenting procedure is needed did not improve outcomes and was more costly than using angiography, or a heart X-ray, alone to guide the procedure, according to research presented at the American College of Cardiology's 70th Annual Scientific Session.
A Kaiser Family Foundation survey concluded that, for the second year in a row, employer-provided insurance costs went up only moderately in 2012. But employee wages still didn't keep pace.
W. L. Gore & Associates reported that the first patient, in an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical study evaluating the self sealing GORE® ACUSEAL Vascular Graft in patients on hemodialysis, has been surgically implanted with the device. The successful surgical procedure was performed on July 29, 2010 at Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina. Less than 24 hours after the device was implanted it was successfully cannulated or punctured for initial hemodialysis access.
