Rush University Medical Center has received the UHC's (University HealthSystem Consortium) Quality Leadership Award, ranking fifth among 104 academic medical centers in the UHC's annual study. Rush is the only medical center in Illinois to be listed among the 12 top ranking medical centers.
While U.S. soldiers fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan are surviving injuries that in previous conflicts likely would have been fatal, the number of wounded with major tissue loss has never before been so high.
The human gut is filled with 100 trillion symbiotic bacteria-ten times more microbial cells than our own cells-representing close to one thousand different species. "And yet, if you were to eat a piece of chicken with just a few Salmonella, your immune system would mount a potent inflammatory response," says Sarkis K.
