In this Foreign Policy Association blog post, freelance writer Julia Robinson calls for individuals to start demanding more action on non-communicable diseases (NCDs), writing, "It is possible to have stronger responses to NCDs" than those presented in the political declaration that resulted from last month's U.N. High-level Meeting (HLM) on NCDs, such as the smoking bans, requirements for posting nutrition information in restaurants and trans fat restrictions enacted in New York City by Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
Every year around 157,000 children aged 11-15 start smoking - that's enough to fill 5,200 classrooms or make up nearly 14,000 junior football teams. These shocking figures, revealed in a new analysis by Cancer Research UK, highlight the ongoing scale of the tobacco problem, and underline the importance of sustained action to discourage young people from starting to smoke, including by introducing plain packaging for all tobacco products as soon as possible.
The 362,000-member National Taxpayers Union (NTU) today condemned the Senate Finance Committee's 14-9 vote to support the health care bill drafted by Senator Max Baucus (D-MT), pointing to hundreds of billions of dollars in damaging tax increases. This so-called "moderate" health care reform bill would grow the already bloated federal budget while saddling middle class families with billions in new taxes.
Neurocrine Biosciences, Inc. today reported that it has entered into a privately negotiated transaction to sell an aggregate of 4,784,689 primary shares of its common stock to affiliates of Venrock at a price of $2.09 per share, raising aggregate gross proceeds to Neurocrine of approximately $10 million. Neurocrine expects the financing to close on or about December 22, 2009, subject to customary closing conditions.
