An international group of scientists led by the University of Granada (UGR) has demonstrated that the long-term intake of sunflower or fish oils damages the liver and can cause a series of alterations in it, giving rise to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.
Dementia is an ageing-related condition affecting mental acuity and memory. Incidence doubles in a population for every five years over the age of 65 years, so that almost one fifth of those living to 85 can expect to have the condition and a third of those over the age of 95 will likely be affected.
Assistance for mental ailments especially in the youth via internet could be a very cost effective measure say researchers. The researchers have identified the gaps between the demand and supply of mental healthcare services in Australia.
A new study disputes the effectiveness of mortality as a measure of the quality of care provided by hospitals to stroke patients. The paper - which was simultaneously presented today at the International Stroke Conference in San Diego and published in the journal Stroke - found that use of do-not-resuscitate orders differ widely between hospitals and that this variation can significantly skew a hospital's quality "ranking" based on mortality.
Deadly flu viruses, including the H5N1 bird flu and H3N2 swine flu, may have met their match in FluGen's universal vaccine, REDEE FLU.
