New model could help internet addicts realize problem and reduce usage

"New York's budget took another blow on Monday, as Congress pulled away from providing more than $1 billion in expected health-care funding. If the money doesn't show up soon, officials warn, there will be layoffs. Senate aides said Monday that a measure to extend unemployment benefits is likely to pass this week, but won't include the extra Medicaid money that Gov. David Paterson and Mayor Michael Bloomberg had been seeking to plug budget holes. In previous versions of the bill, the money had been included along with unemployment benefits."

Haemonetics acquires SEBRA's blood collection and processing business

Haemonetics Corporation, a global blood management solutions company, and Engineering and Research Associates Inc. (known as "SEBRA(R)"), a leading provider of blood and medical manufacturing technologies, announced today that Haemonetics has acquired the assets of SEBRA's blood collection and processing business for $12.5 million cash. The acquisition is expected to close within the next several weeks.

Mutated Nesprin4 protein prevents hearing

Because half of all instances of hearing loss are linked to genetic mutations, advanced gene research is an invaluable tool for uncovering causes of deafness - and one of the biggest hopes for the development of new therapies. Now Prof. Karen Avraham of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine at Tel Aviv University has discovered a significant mutation in a LINC family protein - part of the cells of the inner ear - that could lead to new treatments for hearing disorders.
