Lawsuit details how the Sackler family allegedly built an Oxycontin fortune

The first nine months of 2013 started off as a banner year for the Sackler family, owners of the pharmaceutical company that produces OxyContin, the addictive opioid pain medication. Purdue Pharma paid the family $400 million from its profits during that time, claims a lawsuit filed by the Massachusetts attorney general.

Forsyth receives research grants from National Institutes of Health stimulus funding

Four Forsyth scientists have received grants from the latest round of National Institutes of Health stimulus funding through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. To date, Forsyth has received 13 ARRA grants totally nearly $6.4 million. The recent round of funding includes three highly competitive 'Challenge Grants'. The NIH received 22,000 submissions in the Challenge Grant competition ― only about 500 were funded.

Health programs should address gender violence

Noting the potential "devastating and lasting" health impacts of physical and sexual violence on women and girls, Scott Radloff, director of USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health, writes in USAID's "IMPACTblog," "The health sector can play a vital role in preventing gender-based violence by helping to identify abuse early, providing victims with the necessary treatment, and referring women to appropriate and informed care."

Researchers win $2.3M grant to develop virtual reality simulator for training laparoscopic surgeons

Minimally invasive surgery is increasingly common and effective for operating inside the human abdomen. In these laparoscopic procedures, which use slender, handheld tools inserted into the body of the patient, the skill of the surgeon is the most important factor determining the success of the operation. A team of interdisciplinary researchers led by Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has won a $2.3 million federal grant to develop a touch-sensitive virtual reality simulator that will standardize how surgeons are trained and certified to perform laparoscopic procedures.
