UCSD researchers discover cell signaling pathway that controls initiation, progression of colorectal cancer

Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have discovered a cell signaling pathway that appears to exert some control over initiation and progression of colorectal cancer, the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. A key protein in the pathway also appears to be predictive of cancer survival rates.

Zimmer third quarter net sales decrease 1.1% to $965 million

Zimmer Holdings, Inc. today reported financial results for the quarter ended September 30, 2010. The Company reported third quarter net sales of $965 million, a decrease of 1.1% reported and 0.5% constant currency from the third quarter of 2009. Diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $0.96 on both a reported and an adjusted basis, an increase of 9.1% adjusted over the prior year period.

Medicare worries may tip balance to Democrat in NY congressional race

Republicans are growing increasingly pessimistic over their prospects in a race for a western New York congressional seat the party was once thought a lock to hold. With the contest entering its final weekend, party officials acknowledge what a Siena College poll released Saturday confirmed: Republican Jane Corwin narrowly trails Democrat Kathy Hochul. The Republican has so far failed to capture a portion of GOP votes that instead might be cast toward Jack Davis.
