First robotically-assisted liver resection performed at Jefferson University Hospital

Cataldo Doria, M.D., Ph.D., Nicoletti Family Professor of Transplant Surgery at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University; director of the Division of Transplantation; and co-director of the liver tumor program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital is the first surgeon at Jefferson to perform a robotically-assisted liver resection. He is only one of a handful of surgeons across the country certified to do so.

Thiazolidinedione drugs linked with increased risk of DME in patients with Type 2 diabetes

Treatment with glucose-lowering thiazolidinedione drugs in patients with Type 2 diabetes appears to be associated with an increased risk of diabetic macular edema (a complication that may affect vision) at 1-year and 10-year follow-up evaluations, according to a report published Online First by Archives of Internal Medicine, a JAMA Network publication.

In people with longstanding type 2 diabetes who are at high risk for heart attack and stroke, lowering blood sugar to near-normal levels did not delay the combined risk of diabetic damage to kidneys, eyes, or nerves, but did delay several other signs of diabetic damage, a study has found. The intensive glucose treatment was compared with standard glucose control.
