Global task force of bone health experts question effectiveness of spinal fusion procedures

There is little to no evidence that two surgical procedures used to fuse crumbled vertebrae following a spinal fracture caused by osteoporosis reduce pain for patients any better than non-surgical or placebo procedures, according to a new report from a global task force of bone health experts published today in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research.

Study highlights utility of CDS for diagnosing major depression

In the last 2010 issue of Psychotherapy and Psychosomatics, a new scale for measuring depression in cardiac patients is presented. The Cardiac Depression Scale was initially developed specifically for cardiac patients. Its purpose is to allow measurement over the continuum between low-level depressive symptomatology and major depression.

Largest study to date to look at BMC therapy in patients with heart failure

Use of a patient's bone marrow cells for treating chronic ischemic heart failure did not result in improvement on most measures of heart function, according to a study appearing in JAMA. The study is being published early online to coincide with its presentation at the American College of Cardiology's annual scientific sessions.

Much to the concern of the Royal Life Saving Society, more and more Australian children do not know how to swim, or lack the skills to keep themselves alive in the water. It is estimated that up to 20 per cent of children finish primary school without the ability to swim the length of an Olympic-sized swimming pool. For example more than 50,000 or a fifth of NSW students will start high school next year unable to swim 50 meters.

Dominion develops and validates clinical quantitative assays for tapentadol

Dominion Diagnostics (Dominion) has recently developed and validated one of the first clinical quantitative assays for the drug tapentadol (Nucynta(TM)) performed by liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS). Tapentadol, recently approved for use by the FDA, is a centrally-active analgesic that has demonstrated efficacy in pain relief with improved gastrointestinal tolerability compared to other opioids for pain management.
