Pediatric racial minorities less likely to get kidney transplants

Among children with kidney disease, certain races are less likely to get kidney transplants and are more likely to die than other races, according to two studies from Emory University that were presented during the American Society of Nephrology's Annual Kidney Week.

Brain atrophy in elderly leads to unintended racism, depression and problem gambling

In a study appearing in the October issue of Current Directions in Psychological Science, University of Queensland psychologist, Bill von Hippel, reports that decreased inhibitory ability in late adulthood can lead to unintended prejudice, social inappropriateness, depression, and gambling problems.

Health care costs rank among top economic problems for U.S. residents

Health care costs are among the top economic problems experienced by U.S. residents, according to a poll released on Tuesday by the Kaiser Family Foundation, the Los Angeles Times reports. For the poll, a nationally representative sample of 2,003 adults was interviewed by telephone between April 3 and 13. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus three percentage points.

BARDA awards contract to develop Pfenex Expression Technology

Pfenex Inc. today announced that the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), through the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) has awarded Pfenex a contract providing for up to a total of $18.8 million in funding, provided that certain milestones are achieved and that all contract options and extensions are exercised by the government. The contract will support the development of a robust Pfenex Expression Technology based production strain and process for the production of bulk recombinant protective antigen (rPA) from anthrax.
