WTC first responders at higher risk for head and neck cancers, study finds

A Rutgers study has found a significant increase in head and neck cancers among workers and volunteers who responded to the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC), pointing to newly emerging risks that require ongoing monitoring and treatment of those who were exposed during the initial response.

Amity Foundation to break ground for Dragonfly Village children and family center

The public is invited to attend the official Ground Breaking Ceremony for Amity Foundation's state of the art children and family center, Dragonfly Village. The event will take place on Thursday morning 8:00 a.m. sharp August 19, 2010. The site is located on the campus of Amity's Circle Tree Ranch 10500 E. Tanque Verde Road, Tucson, Arizona 85749 (just east of Houghton Road.) The event will proceed indoors by 8:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m. for more information and refreshments.

DTC genetic testing has negative consequences in children

A woman coping with the burden of familial breast cancer can't help but wonder if her young daughter will suffer the same fate. Has she inherited the same disease-causing mutation? Is it best to be prepared for the future, or to wait? During the last decade, genetic tests have been through a sea change, both in their availability and the technologies behind them. Today there are at least 34 companies that offer direct to consumer (DTC) DNA testing, some of which return health results. And now it is possible to sequence someone's entire genetic code for the price of a laptop.

Report: Protecting eyes from UV exposure not high priority for Americans

Three-quarters of Americans are concerned about potential eye problems from the sun's ultraviolet rays, yet only 31 percent protect their eyes with sunglasses or other UV-protective eyewear every time they go outside, according to a new nationwide survey released today. The report by The Vision Council, based on a survey of more than 10,000 adults, finds 34 percent of adults have experienced symptoms of prolonged UV exposure, such as eye irritation, trouble seeing, and red or swollen eyes.
