Opioid epidemic likely applies to high-risk dialysis population, study shows

A new analysis indicates that the US opioid epidemic likely applies to the unique population of dialysis patients. The study, which appears in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology, also found links between higher opioid drug prescription and increased risks of dialysis discontinuation, hospitalization, and early death.

Aspirin use associated with reduced mortality risk in hospitalized COVID-19 patients

Hospitalized COVID-19 patients who were taking a daily low-dose aspirin to protect against cardiovascular disease had a significantly lower risk of complications and death compared to those who were not taking aspirin, according to a new study led by researchers at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.

Merck returns worldwide development and commercialization rights for AN2690 to Anacor Pharmaceuticals

Anacor Pharmaceuticals announced today that Merck has returned full worldwide development and commercialization rights for AN2690 to Anacor. AN2690 is a topical anti-fungal therapy being developed for onychomycosis, a fungal infection of the nail and nail bed. It is estimated that onychomycosis affects approximately 35 million people in the United States.

American CareSource second-quarter revenues decrease to $16.0 million

American CareSource Holdings Inc. today announced second quarter 2010 revenues of $16.0 million compared to $17.1 million in the corresponding prior year quarter. Net income for the second quarter 2010 was $299,000, or $0.02 per diluted share, compared to $534,000, or $0.01 per diluted share, in the corresponding prior year quarter. Net income for the second quarter 2010 included a federal income tax provision of $137,000, or $0.01 per diluted share, which was not included in net income for the second quarter 2009.
