Researchers have discovered that secondary infection with the Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacterium (or "superbug") often kills influenza patients because the flu virus alters the antibacterial response of white blood cells, causing them to damage the patients' lungs instead of destroying the bacterium.
Swedish Medical Center, the largest nonprofit healthcare provider in the Greater Seattle area, has selected tools provided by Aegis Health Group to enhance its physician relationship management program. Aegis' custom-designed solution includes its proprietary contact management software PRISM as well as sales training and program development support.
In surprising findings, researchers from MassGeneral Hospital for Children and Boston Children's Hospital have discovered that nearly one in five children with celiac disease sustained persistent intestinal damage, despite strict adherence to a gluten-free diet.
Researchers in University College Dublin (UCD) led by Conway Fellow, Dr Oliver Blacque have revealed new information about a gene implicated in Joubert syndrome and related cerebellar disorders (JSRDs) that are characterised by blindness, bone abnormalities, cystic kidneys, developmental delay and loss of muscle tone and control. The findings from this research, which is funded by Science Foundation Ireland, have been published today in a leading science journal, Journal of Cell Biology.
