Denis Mizne, CEO of the Lemann Foundation, today hailed the "spirit of co-operation" during the wide-scale Brazilian clinical trials that helped deliver the Oxford/AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine, following the news that it is up to 90% per cent effective after passing phase-3 global trials.
Now students at Shippensburg University in Pennsylvania can get the "morning after" pill by sliding $25 into a vending machine, an idea that has drawn the attention of federal regulators and raised questions about how accessible emergency contraception should be.
The holiday season is officially in full gear and with it comes the tempting Thanksgiving-to-New-Year's food fest. While research shows that the average person really only gains about a pound over the course of the holidays, it can still have a big cumulative effect on waistlines. That's because the extra weight usually doesn't come off the following year.
"More than 26 percent of married women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo want to avoid pregnancy but aren't using a modern method of family planning," Christopher Hook, program assistant for USAID's Office of Population and Reproductive Health, writes in the agency's "IMPACTblog," adding, "Furthermore, meeting this demand for family planning is not an easy task in the DRC, where deep-seated traditional and religious views exist around family size, gender roles and the use of contraception."
