Researchers at the University of Toronto have uncovered new insights on the genetic causes of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), which is also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. These findings could uncover a new way to detect a genetic predisposition to ALS before the disease strikes.
Scientists have known for some time that these individuals carry a genetic mutation (known as CCR5-Ä32) that prevents the virus from entering the cells of the immune system but have been unable to account for the high levels of the gene in Scandinavia and relatively low levels in areas bordering the Mediterranean.
Aegerion Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company focused on the treatment of cardiovascular and metabolic disease, today announced additional data from its ongoing Phase III trial involving its lead cholesterol management compound, lomitapide (AEGR-733), which is a microsomal triglyceride transfer protein (MTP) inhibitor small molecule drug.
A new study conducted at the Swinburne's Centre for Mental Health suggests that the reward center of the brain works differently across the day, with it's peak being in the morning and evening.
