When UC Santa Barbara neurology professor Kenneth S. Kosik was a newly minted graduate in 1972, with bachelor's and master's degrees in English literature from Case Western University, becoming one of the foremost authorities in the field of Alzheimer's research was probably nowhere on his radar. Allergan, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) for the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB) with symptoms of urge urinary incontinence, urgency and frequency in adults who have had an inadequate response to or are intolerant of an anticholinergic medication.
A new study in the British Medical Journal published on December 11, 2019, finds that up to 2 in every 5 prescriptions in the US might not be relevant clinically. This means that clinicians have a long way to go in rational antibiotic use and achieving proper antibiotic stewardship. The characteristics linked with antibiotic prescription without documented indication could help improve practices in this field.
