Children younger than 5 who live in economically disadvantaged areas had a greater risk of medication poisoning that resulted in referral to a health care facility, according to scientists at the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health and the University of California, San Diego. These areas were rural and experienced high unemployment, along with lower rates of high school graduation and lower household income.
Particle engineering company Enavail announced today that it has obtained an exclusive license from The University of Texas at Austin for a portfolio of particle engineering technologies that will be utilized for pharmaceutical, biotechnology and nutraceutical applications.
Scientists from the University of Sheffield have discovered a novel function of the C9orf72 protein which is linked to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) - giving a new insight into the most common genetic cause of the degenerative diseases.
American Medical News: "AvMed Health, a Florida-based health plan, said data about nearly 1.2 million members and former members were breached when two laptops were stolen in December 2009 from an AvMed office in Gainesville, Fla. The insurer notified 360,000 customers of the breach in February. But AvMed said on June 3 that further investigation found that an additional 860,000 people had been affected. Information included names, addresses, birth dates, Social Security numbers and health information.
Studies have shown nearly 70 percent of patients with breast cancer do not discuss all surgical options with their surgeon before their initial surgery and that such a discussion significantly affects a woman's treatment decision.
