Data supporting the need for better recognition of iron deficiency will be presented this week at the United European Gastroenterology Week Congress in Berlin. Iron deficiency is frequently under-diagnosed, resulting in increased hospitalisation, reduced quality of life and higher death rates in patients with comorbid conditions. The WHO has estimated that iron deficiency causes the loss of 48,225 disability-adjusted life-years worldwide, more than is seen with lung cancer.
The scientific journal Addiction has today published the first cost-effectiveness analysis of financial incentives to help pregnant women stop smoking. The report found that financial incentives are highly cost-effective, with an incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER) of £482 ($734) per quality-adjusted life year (QALY), which is well below recommended thresholds in high income countries.
GlobalPost reports on President Barack Obama's Global Health Initiative (GHI) in Nepal, one of eight GHI focus countries, and examines whether "a long-standing U.S. law" that "prohibits U.S. funds from being used for abortion services overseas for the purpose of family planning ... is hurting its efforts to improve health care" in the country.
During a town hall meeting Tuesday on health care reform, Senator Arlen Specter (D-Pa.) stated his opposition to legislation that would cover illegal aliens. Specter has been a long-time champion of amnesty for illegal aliens, he was the author of the 2006 amnesty bill (S. 2611) that was widely rejected by the American people.
