Biologists at Brown University have found a way to measure the effects of aging by watching the ebb and flow of chromatin, a structure along strands of DNA that either silences or permits gene expression. In several newly published experiments they show that gene silencing via chromatin in fruit flies declines with age.
A team of scientists at the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel revealed that the ability to detect smells predicts recovery and long-term survival in patients who had a severe brain injury. The study, published in the journal Nature, shows that the simple "sniff test," which is inexpensive and convenient, could help doctors to diagnose and develop treatments for patients who have brain injuries and unconsciousness.
The presence of an immune-suppressing protein in non-cancerous immune cells may predict how patients with different types of cancer respond to treatment, a multi-center phase I study using an investigational immune therapy drug has found.
"Diabetes is the only major disease with a death rate that continues to be on the upswing," proclaimed a front-page New York Times story recently.
As cases of the coronavirus (COVID-19) continue to increase outside of China, the Australian government has activated its emergency response plan for an impending coronavirus pandemic.
