Research teams from The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) and Paris, France have discovered a gene defect linked to a cluster of systemic complications, including life-threatening thoracic aortic disease and intracranial aneurysms. The new syndrome is similar, but distinct from known syndromes such as Marfan and Loeys-Dietz syndrome.
A Portsmouth academic's research project has been shortlisted for an award by the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA).
In December 2005, Seung-Hui Cho was found to present "an imminent danger to himself as a result of mental illness" by a special judge. This should have barred him from owning a gun under federal law, 18 U.S.C. section 922(g), but, because his mental health records were never sent to the FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System, in March 2007 Cho was able to purchase the guns he used the following month to shoot and kill 32 people at Virginia Tech.
By delivering an innovative, interdisciplinary approach to drug abuse and addiction research, The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston (UTHealth) has been renewed as a "Center of Excellence" by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, part of the National Institutes of Health.
