The Wall Street Journal: The four largest for-profit health insurers in the U.S. - Aetna Inc., Humana Inc., UnitedHealth Group Inc., and WellPoint Inc. - "on average denied policies to one out of every seven applicants based on their prior medical history," according to a congressional investigative report released yesterday by Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee, and Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.).
New studies suggest that "[d]eveloping countries with limited access to advanced health-care facilities may be in for a rough ride with swine [H1N1] flu and even countries with high-tech ICUs may find themselves pushed to the limit as their hospitals struggle to save gravely ill H1N1 patients," the Canadian Press reports.
In a survey of nurses in the UK, it has been found that almost half of nurses feel their sex lives are damaged by the emotional stress of their job.
With California lawmakers voting this month to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products from 18 to 21 years of age, questions are being raised about its impact. Although much of the discussion of the policy has centered on the 18 to 20 year-olds who will no longer be able to buy cigarettes, the real focus should be its potential to keep cigarettes away from high school students 14 to 17 years old, said John Billimek, a researcher with the Health Policy Research Institute in the UC Irvine School of Medicine.
