In a study conducted among 25 healthy individuals living in a controlled setting who were randomized to overconsumption of different levels of protein diets, those consuming the low-protein diet had less weight gain compared to those consuming normal and high protein diets, and calories alone, and not protein appeared to contribute to an increase in body fat, according to a study in the January 4 issue of JAMA.
Hip replacement is often performed in patients with juvenile arthritis when their joints have been severely damaged by the disease.
Medical imaging is a notoriously data intensive field with its volume, variety and speed of data generation multiplying every day. Conventional tools are incapable of efficiently managing such large and complex datasets; posing limits on scalability, sustainability and usability. As the U.S. medical imaging field evolves from being not only data-intensive but also data-driven, big data tools are expected to better handle medical imaging, patient records, and improve workflow efficiency, diagnostic accuracy, treatment decisions and health management.
libragen, a contract research organization dedicated to biocatalysis and metagenomics, has been a major contributor to the success of PolyModE (Polysaccharide Modifying Enzymes), a large collaborative research project funded by the European Community. The project, which began in 2009 and ended in April this year, looked at developing novel polysaccharide modifying enzymes for the optimized use of hydrocolloids as, for example, food additives or novel therapeutic agents in the food sciences and medical industries. Researchers focused on six industry-targeted hydrocolloids (alginates, carrageenans, chitosans, glycosaminoglycans, pectins, and xanthan gums) where traditional chemistry fails to achieve a certain desired modification.
