The simple act of running in an exercise wheel delays the onset of some symptoms of Huntington's disease in a mouse model of the fatal human disorder according to research published in the open-access journal BMC Neuroscience.
Abbott today announced positive six-month results from the first 45 patients enrolled in the second stage of the ABSORB trial, which was presented during the Late-Breaking Clinical Trials session at the EuroPCR 2010 conference. At six months, Abbott's bioresorbable vascular scaffold (BVS) demonstrated strong results, with a low (4.4 percent) rate of major adverse cardiac events (MACE) and no blood clots (thromboses).
The finding by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis shows that an enzyme known as cathepsin G regulates the ability of immune cells known as neutrophils to secrete chemicals that attract other immune cells and start the local inflammatory process. Over time, the excessive accumulation of immune cells can lead to tissue and cartilage damage in joints, causing pain and limiting mobility.
