If a 747 jetliner crashed every day, killing all 500 people aboard, there would be a national uproar over aviation safety and an all-out mobilization to fix the problem. In the nation's hospitals, though, about the same number of people die on average every day from medical "adverse events," many of them preventable errors such as infections or incorrect medications.
Unless there is a major shift in the way the world fights tuberculosis-from a reliance on biomedical solutions to an approach that combines biomedical interventions with social actions-the epidemic and drug resistance will worsen, say researchers at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Sleep apnea, a disorder in which breathing repeatedly stops during sleep, is a potentially serious condition because it deprives the body of oxygen. It becomes an even more serious condition in pregnant women—who can be more prone to it—because the oxygen deprivation may affect the baby.
The Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation in collaboration with Project C.U.R.E (Commission on Urgent Relief and Equipment) today donated medical equipment and supplies worth more than U.S. $500,000 to the Government of the Kingdom of Swaziland's Ministry of Health to help strengthen health services provided to mothers, infants, and children in the country.
