Lower thresholds for blood transfusions during cardiac surgery have proven to be safe and provide good patient outcomes compared to traditional thresholds, according to the largest research study ever performed in this area. The lower or "restrictive" threshold also can help reduce the amount of blood transfused and money spent for each procedure.
The fingers on the outside - i.e. the thumb and little finger - therefore react faster than the middle finger, which is exposed to the "cross fire" of two neighbours on each side. Through targeted learning, this speed handicap can be compensated. The working group led by PD Dr. Hubert Dinse (Neural Plasticity Lab at the Institute for Neuroral Computation) report in the current issue of PNAS.
Researchers from the University of California, San Diego recently offered the sharpest-yet picture of how core biochemical pathways in skeletal muscle cells and fat cells are altered in people who suffer from insulin resistance-a primary defect in type 2 diabetes and obesity. Taking a systems biology approach, the bioengineers and medical researchers also determined how a common class of drugs for treating insulin resistance-TZDs-alter these same core pathways.
The Alcon Independent Director Committee noted today that Alcon once again delivered strong earnings in the second quarter of 2010. Alcon's 2Q 2010 Adjusted EPS of $2.22 per share represented a year-over-year growth rate of 14.4% and exceeded Wall Street's mean consensus estimate of $2.03 per share by 9.4%. Alcon's strong EPS growth was driven by an 11.3% increase in organic sales resulting, in part, from a 22.3% increase in advanced technology intraocular lens sales, a 17.2% increase in glaucoma sales and a 24.2% increase in emerging market sales.
Here's a bold prediction for the new year. By 2020, the American health insurance industry will be extinct. Insurance companies will be replaced by accountable care organizations -; groups of doctors, hospitals and other health care providers who come together to provide the full range of medical care for patients.
