Bionomics and Merck Serono to collaborate to discover and develop novel, oral treatment for MS

Merck Serono, a division of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, announced today that a Development and Licensing Agreement with Bionomics was signed, under which Merck Serono would develop new treatments for multiple sclerosis (MS) and other autoimmune conditions based on compounds from Bionomics Kv1.3 program.

Novel chemical virus can cross double lipid layer surrounding cells to release drugs

Inspired by their mode of action, scientists from the CNRS and Université de Strasbourg have designed a "chemical virus" that can cross the double lipid layer that surrounds cells, and then disintegrate in the intracellular medium in order to release active compounds.

Cerus prices underwritten public offering

Cerus Corporation today announced the pricing of an underwritten public offering of 7,368,422 units, with each unit consisting of one share of its common stock and a warrant to purchase 0.5 of a share of its common stock, at a price to the public of $2.85 per unit. The aggregate public offering price of this offering is approximately $21.0 million, and the net proceeds to the Company, after deducting underwriting discounts and commissions, but before legal and other estimated offering expenses, are expected to be approximately $19.7 million.

One in five Americans visited ER in 2007

The New York Times: One in five Americans visited the emergency room in 2007 whether they were insured or not, according to data from the National Center for Health Statistics. "Among the uninsured, 7.4 percent made two or more visits to an E.R., but so did 5.1 percent of people with private insurance. Medicaid recipients were the heaviest users of E.R.'s, with 15.3 percent of them making two or more visits during the year.
