Listeriosis outbreak sparks unofficial cantaloupe recall

At present the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to determine the source of contaminated cantaloupe blamed for the nationwide Listeriosis outbreak. Several Colorado grocery stores have removed cantaloupe from shelves, though there has been no official recall.

Metabolic and immune markers as tools for risk stratification and monitoring in COVID-19

In a new study posted to the medRxiv* server scientists from Weil Cornell University and Stony Brook University in New York attempted to identify the metabolic and immune markers associated with severe COVID-19 disease using high-throughput targeted nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and high-dimensional flow cytometry. This will facilitate risk stratification, monitoring, and therapeutic interventions in COVID-19 patients.

Genome-scale CRISPR screens pinpoint promising antiviral compounds against SARS-CoV-2

In a recent research paper currently available on the bioRxiv* preprint server, scientists in the US used genome-scale CRISPR knockout screens to identify factors that promote infection with the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), revealing the potential for broad-spectrum activity across the coronavirus family.

Caution: blood infections traced to probiotics

Probiotics aren't harmless, says a new study published on November 7, 2019 in the journal Nature Medicine. In fact, some patients may be put at serious risk by the bacteria in probiotics. Doctors should weigh the risks of probiotics in severely ill or immunocompromised patients before prescribing them, as their benefits may be significantly smaller than the danger in such situations.
