Humans play key role in distribution and transmission of Bartonella bacteria

Bartonella bacteria are disease-causing, blood-borne pathogens found in various mammal species. A study in PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases by Hannah Frank and colleagues at Stanford University, California suggests that humans play an important role in disease risk, infection patterns, and distribution of Bartonella, advancing current understanding of Bartonella's evolutionary history and how the bacteria may be transmitted between humans and other animal species.

World's first nanofluidic device with complex 3-D surfaces

Researchers at the Commerce Department's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and Cornell University have capitalized on a process for manufacturing integrated circuits at the nanometer (billionth of a meter) level and used it to develop a method for engineering the first-ever nanoscale fluidic (nanofluidic) device with complex three-dimensional surfaces.

Study: Ebola transmission from deceased patients may be possible

To determine how long Ebola virus could remain infectious in a body after death, National Institutes of Health scientists sampled deceased Ebola-infected monkeys and discovered the virus remained viable for at least seven days. They also detected non-infectious viral RNA for up to 70 days post-mortem. The study, published in Emerging Infectious Diseases, suggests that Ebola transmission from deceased individuals may be possible for an extended period of time following death, underscoring the importance of using safe practices for handling corpses.

AstraZeneca to present Phase III CVOT DECLARE-TIMI 58 results at AHA Scientific Sessions

AstraZeneca will present 20 abstracts including a late-breaking oral presentation on the full results from the Phase III cardiovascular outcomes trial DECLARE -TIMI 58, the broadest SGLT2 inhibitor CVOT conducted to date, as well as new research from the Company's Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism therapy area at the American Heart Association Scientific Sessions, November 10-12, 2018, in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
