Researchers develop molecule that binds to GAA enzymes key to progress of Pompe disease

Researchers at Leiden University have made a breakthrough in the study of the hereditary Pompe disease. Together with colleagues in York, they have developed a molecule that binds to the enzyme that is key to the progress of the disease. The findings have been published in ACS Central Science.

New data on pixantrone Phase III trial in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma to be presented

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. (CTI) announced today that Ruth Pettengell, M.D. of St. George's Hospital, University of London, the lead investigator for the PIX 301 EXTEND trial will present new data on the pixantrone phase III trial in relapsed/refractory aggressive non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) at the 51st Annual Meeting of the American Society of Hematology on Saturday, December 5, 2009 in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Multiple studies find no consensus on kava-induced hepatotoxicity in Western countries

A major new review of scientific knowledge on kava - a plant used to make dietary supplements and a trendy drink with calming effects - has left unsolved the mystery of why Pacific Island people can consume it safely, while people in the United States, Europe, and other Western cultures sometimes experience toxic effects. The article appears in ACS' journal Chemical Research in Toxicology.

Katarina Sjövall has studied partners of individuals with colorectal cancer, lung cancer, breast cancer or prostate cancer. The study shows that the number of diagnosed diseases among partners increased by 25 per cent after the cancer diagnosis.
