According to a latest research by Canadian scientists high estrogen levels are associated with an inability to pay attention and learn. Researchers at the Concordia University in Montreal conducted this study to assess the link between estrogen and memory and learning. The study was published in the journal Brain and Cognition.

LabCorp acquires Genzyme Genetics for $925 million

Laboratory Corporation of America Holdings, today announced that it has entered into a definitive agreement under which LabCorp will acquire Genzyme Genetics, a business unit of Genzyme Corp., in an all cash transaction valued at $925 million. Net of expected income tax benefits, less acquisition related expenses, the acquisition has a net cash cost to LabCorp of approximately $795 million.

Caribbean summit on HIV/AIDS long overdue

At last week's Caribbean Summit on HIV/AIDS in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, a "few regional leaders ... have finally taken their heads out of our soft sand," which hopefully will "expos[e] the salutary neglect" of those heads of state who have not applied for funds from the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief for "political reasons" or "fatal ignorance.

Savient second-quarter net loss decreases to $5.0 million

Savient Pharmaceuticals, Inc. reported financial results for the three and six months ended June 30, 2010. The net loss for the second quarter of 2010 was $5.0 million, or $0.07 per basic and diluted share, on total revenues of $1.0 million, compared with a net loss of $54.8 million, or $0.92 per basic and diluted share on total revenues of $0.7 million for the second quarter of 2009.
