TAXUS Element Stent has comparable levels of TLR and late loss in diabetic and non-diabetic patients

Boston Scientific Corporation today announced results from an analysis of 1,166 patients from its PERSEUS clinical program comparing the performance of the TAXUS® Element™ Paclitaxel-Eluting Coronary Stent System in diabetic versus non-diabetic patients. Results demonstrated that despite the known increased risk of restenosis for diabetics versus non-diabetics in patients undergoing coronary revascularization, the TAXUS Element Stent had comparable levels of target lesion revascularization (TLR) and late loss in both diabetic and non-diabetic patients.

Findings could have important implications for personalized treatment of colon cancer

A common observation in oncology is the phenomenon that a patient with a tumor receives a drug and responds very well, but after a few months the cancer comes back and is now resistant to previously administered chemotherapy. What happened? Many mechanisms contribute to explain this effect called "acquired resistance", but today the group Manel Esteller, Director of Epigenetics and Cancer Biology at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute, ICREA researcher and Professor of Genetics at the University of Barcelona, describes in the official Journal of the National Cancer Research Center in the United States, The Journal of The National Cancer Institute, the existence of epigenetic differences that explain the lack of response of the tumor recurs.

University Of Iowa wins $18 million grant to continue study on Huntington's disease

Peg Nopoulos, MD, chair of psychiatry and professor of psychiatry, neurology, and pediatrics in the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, has received a five-year, $18 million grant from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke to continue and expand a decade-long study on brain development in children at risk for developing Huntington's Disease.

New research finds differences in cell fate commitment during embryonic development in mammals

New research shows that all not mammals are created equal. In fact, this work shows that the animals most commonly used by scientists to study mammalian genetics - mice - develop unusually quickly and may not always be representative of embryonic development in other mammals.
