InterAction, an umbrella group representing 37 non-governmental organizations (NGOs), "is calling on Congress and President Barack Obama's administration to keep spending on global health aid at current levels, warning that recent budget cuts risk a dangerous backslide in health and development gains achieved over the past three decades," Inter Press Service reports.
Barry University will receive a $225,000 grant from the Florida Blue Foundation to create and implement a two-year Statewide Nursing Leadership Development program. Over the grant period, a cohort of 32 nurse professionals from eight regions of Florida – East Central, Northeast, Northwest, North Central, Southeast, Southwest, South and West Central - will receive additional education about health policy and leadership in health care systems with a goal of enabling them to become more influential in the field.
NPR: "The new health bill signed by President Obama includes an incentive for doctors to serve the poorest patients by increasing their federal Medicaid payments. This could be quite a significant inducement, as an additional 16 million people are expected to join the Medicaid rolls in the next 10 years."
Type 2 diabetes and obesity are linked to an increased risk of certain cancers. Recently published studies suggested that insulin glargine (a synthetic insulin preparation marketed under the trade name Lantus), may be associated with a higher risk of certain cancers than other insulins or oral glucose lowering medications. However, these studies were unable to control for important factors such as obesity that may have driven the association.
The Washington Post: "Women in their 40s should stop routinely having annual mammograms and older women should cut back to one scheduled exam every other year, an influential federal task force has concluded, challenging the use of one of the most common medical tests" (Stein, 11/17).
