People being treated for bipolar disorder and other psychiatric illnesses are at greater risk of attempting suicide, but physicians may now have tools to predict which of those individuals will attempt it and intervene early to prevent such tragedies from occurring.

Neck scan detects dementia way before symptoms appear

Researchers have shown that early dementia signs could be detected by a simple short scan of the individual's neck. The actual dementia symptoms could be seen up to 10 years after these signs are visible on the scans they add. Researchers find new role for SHARPIN protein in melanoma growth

Researchers at Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery and the Technion in Israel have found a new role for the SHARPIN protein. In addition to being one of three proteins in the linear ubiquitin chain assembly complex, regulating NFκB and other inflammatory molecules, SHARPIN modulates PRMT5, an epigenetic master switch that controls several proteins linked to melanoma. The research was published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation.
