The Academy of Radiology Welcomes passage of omnibus appropriations bill

The Academy of Radiology Research thanks Congress and the President for their support of the omnibus appropriations bill. This legislation contains a $1 billion increase for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including a $10 million increase for the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering (NIBIB).

New T cell engineering approach can improve success rate of immune-cell therapies

Clinical trials using patients' own immune cells to target tumors have yielded promising results. However, this approach usually works only if the patients also receive large doses of drugs designed to help immune cells multiply rapidly, and those drugs have life-threatening side effects. Now a team of MIT engineers has devised a way to deliver the necessary drugs by smuggling them on the backs of the cells sent in to fight the tumor. That way, the drugs reach only their intended targets, greatly reducing the risk to the patient.

Tobacco cessation must be included as part of standard clinical care for cancer patients

While tobacco use can significantly hamper cancer treatment, few cancer researchers are incorporating tobacco assessment into their clinical studies. That's the conclusion a group of investigators led by Graham Warren, MD, PhD, Assistant Professor in the Department of Radiation Medicine at Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI), drew from a recent survey of cancer clinical trials.
