Risk of breast cancer mutations underestimated for Asian women, Stanford study shows

Oncologist Allison Kurian, MD, and her colleagues at the Stanford University School of Medicine were perplexed. Computer models designed to identify women who might have dangerous genetic mutations that increase their risk of breast and ovarian cancer worked well for white women. But they seemed to be less reliable for another ethnic group.

Men more of a menace on the road than women

A groundbreaking study published online in the journal Injury Prevention in April 2020 called attention to the risks posed to fellow travelers and pedestrians by various modes of transport, different road types and settings, and gender. The researchers found that heavy vehicles, which are mostly driven by men, were responsible for the majority of traffic fatalities in England, and as such, women drivers posed less risk to the public than their male counterparts.

Hospital-insurer tug of war leaves patients in middle

The Washington Post reports on a health care battle between a hospital and insurers that is leaving patients caught in the middle. At Bayonne Medical Center in New Jersey, Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield delivered letters to patients at the hospital "warning that the patient would face a huge hospital bill if he did not leave right away."
