New study suggests that musclin may promote muscle health

A new study in mice shows that exercise causes muscle to release a peptide that builds the muscle's capacity for energy production and increases physical endurance, allowing for longer and more intense exercise.

Kid's allergies estimated to be more prevalent than thought

It is found that food allergies in children might be more common than some previous research has suggested. A new study estimates that about 8% of children, about 6 million in the U.S., have a food allergy. Not only is this estimate higher than some previous research has reported, the study found that reported allergic reactions are often severe and that many kids have more than one allergy.

Added benefit of thyroid cancer drug vandetanib not proven

Vandetanib (trade name: Caprelsa) has been approved in Germany since February 2012 for the treatment of adult patients who have a particular form of aggressive thyroid cancer. In a new benefit assessment, the German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care has now examined the added benefit of the drug pursuant to the Act on the Reform of the Market for Medicinal Products.

Scientists discover high levels of antioxidants in two species of neotropical blueberries

One of the treats of summer-fresh, antioxidant-rich blueberries-has new competition for the title of "superfruit." But at least the contenders are keeping the title in the family. Researchers have found that two species of wild blueberries native to the tropical regions of Central and South America-the New World tropics, or Neotropics-contain two to four times more antioxidants than the blueberries sold in U.S. markets.

PTC Therapeutics completes $50M financing

PTC Therapeutics, Inc. (PTC) today announced the completion of a $50 million financing. The round was led by The Column Group - a new investor - and existing investor Delphi Ventures. The co-lead investors were joined by current investors Credit Suisse First Boston, HBM BioVentures, Novo A/S, Celgene, and other existing and new investors. In conjunction with the Delphi investment, general partner Deepa Pakianathan, Ph.D. will join PTC's Board of Directors.
