Microbix and Hunan Biopharmaceutical to build $200-million influenza vaccine facility

Microbix, a developer of a patented technology that doubles the output of influenza vaccine production, announced today it has signed a joint venture agreement with the Hunan Biopharmaceutical Co. Ltd. (a Hunan Province state-owned enterprise) for initial financing to construct Asia's largest influenza vaccine production facility and the third largest vaccine plant in the world.

European Union sets four priority areas, including food security, for upcoming G20 summit

The Devex Development Newswire reports on the upcoming G20 summit, which will take place in Los Cabos, Mexico, on June 18-19. The news service writes, "In a letter issued May 25, European Council President Herman Van Rompuy and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso noted the European Union's four priority areas at the summit," which are growth and employment, strengthening the International Monetary Fund, reforming the financial system, and food security and the G20's development work.

Florida Governor proposes $70B budget; includes $132M in cuts to Medicaid

Florida Gov. Charlie Crist (R) on Thursday unveiled a $70 billion state budget for fiscal year 2009 that would reduce spending on health care by $132 million and that includes new initiatives to expand health coverage, the Orlando Sentinel reports (Kennedy/Deslatte, Orlando Sentinel, 2/1). Crist proposed reducing Medicaid reimbursements for HMOs by $60 million (Follick, Sarasota Herald-Tribune, 2/1).
