Preterm may begin to feel pain around a woman's 35th week of pregnancy, about two to four weeks before delivery, according to a new study from University College London. Using EEG, researchers recorded the babies' brain activity in response to pain, comparing their pain responses from a touch and prick on the heels. The findings were published in the journal Current Biology.
HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt on Friday said that the agency will maintain the current Medicare payment rate for physicians because Congress was unable to pass legislation to avert a 10.6% cut scheduled to go into effect on Tuesday before lawmakers left for the Fourth of July recess, the Washington Post reports. According to the Post, congressional aides said the freeze to payment rates could last 10 days (Kane, Washington Post, 6/28).
W. L. Gore & Associates reported that the first patient, in an Investigational Device Exemption (IDE) clinical study evaluating the self sealing GOREĀ® ACUSEAL Vascular Graft in patients on hemodialysis, has been surgically implanted with the device. The successful surgical procedure was performed on July 29, 2010 at Greenville Hospital System in Greenville, South Carolina. Less than 24 hours after the device was implanted it was successfully cannulated or punctured for initial hemodialysis access.
A silver-coated endotracheal tube may reduce infections with highly resistant bacteria over traditional tubes by nearly half, according to the results of a large randomized trial to be presented at the American Thoracic Society's 2008 International Conference in Toronto on Monday, May 19.
