New therapeutic approach could save diabetics from amputation by promoting wound healing

Diabetic patients frequently have lesions on their feet that are very difficult to heal due to poor blood circulation. In cases of serious non-healing infections, a decision to amputate could be made. A new therapeutic approach, presented recently in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology by Canadian researchers affiliated with the University of Montreal Hospital Research Centre, could prevent these complications by promoting wound healing.

Avastin (bevacizumab) shows promise in phase II study of glioblastoma multiforme

Genentech, Inc. has announced that both study arms of a randomized, multi-center Phase II clinical study of Avastin (bevacizumab) administered alone or in combination with irinotecan chemotherapy demonstrated encouraging six-month progression-free survival (PFS) and objective response rate in patients with relapsed glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), the most common and aggressive type of brain cancer.

FDA requested to publish data supporting assertion on HPV types 6, 11 causing vulvar, vaginal cancers

A Connecticut cancer pathologist/physician/scientist with extensive experience in the field for the past half century has formally challenged the FDA to back claims on its website that human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes 6 and 11 cause vulvar and vaginal cancers in women.

New initiative launched to increase access to clean drinking water in Africa

3000 children in Africa die every day from diseases spread through drinking contaminated water. Robin Moore, a donor and partner of The Joseph Assignment Global Initiative, is doing something about it. She has launched the 100 Day Challenge for Clean Water in Africa. She seeks donations from family, friends, and others concerned about the plight of these children to partner with The Joseph Assignment Global Initiative effort to ship two well drilling machines to Ghana, Africa, in order to effectively increase access to clean drinking water needed to save lives.
