Government favors hospitals' joint purchasing agreement proposal

The Department of Justice announced today that it will not challenge a proposal by Memorial Health Inc. (Memorial), and St. Joseph's/Candler Health System (St. Joseph's/Candler) to enter an exclusive joint purchasing agreement with respect to the purchase of certain medical and surgical supplies.

CUMC plans to build new home for Columbia University School of Nursing

Columbia University Medical Center announced plans today to build a new home for the Columbia University School of Nursing, one of the oldest nursing schools in the nation. The seven-story building will be located on existing Columbia property at the corner of W. 168th Street and Audubon Avenue, at the east end of the CUMC campus. Construction is expected to begin in late 2014.

Reducing levels of protein FKBP51 may yield new antidepressant therapies

Decreasing expression of a protein associated with susceptibility to depression made old mice resistant to depressive-like behavior while improving their hormonal response to stress, a study led by researchers at the University of South Florida found. The lack of this protein, FKBP51, did not adversely affect their memory, learning, or basic motor functions.

Depression treatment guidelines updated

There has been an update in the treatment of clinical depression. This includes suggestions on the use of medication, talk therapy, exercise, and alternative treatments and puts more emphasis on tailor made treatments for patients.
