STERIS first-quarter revenues increase 3% to $291.3 million

STERIS Corporation today announced financial results for its fiscal 2011 first quarter ended June 30, 2010. During the first quarter, the Company recorded the previously announced liability related to the SYSTEM 1 Rebate Program. Of the $110 million pre-tax amount recorded, $102 million is attributable to the Customer Rebate portion of the Program and was recorded as a reduction of revenues, and $8 million is attributable to the disposal of the SYSTEM 1 units to be returned and was recorded as an increase in cost of revenues.

African governments must commit more funds to health to meet previous commitments, WHO, UNFPA say

Cempra commences Phase 2/3 clinical study of CEM-102 for treating acute bacterial skin structure infections

Cempra Pharmaceuticals today announced that enrollment is underway in an adaptive design Phase 2/3 clinical study with CEM-102 for patients suffering from acute bacterial skin structure infections (ABSSI). CEM-102 is an oral antibiotic with an established record of treating staphylococcal infections outside the United States, including those due to methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA).

Smoking cessation products available on PBS

Australia's federal government has announced that it will subsidize the cost of nicotine patches to help smokers quit. The announcement was made by Health Minister Nicola Roxon on Thursday who said that concession card holders would be able to access Nicorette, Nicabate P and Nicotinell under the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme (PBS) from February 1, 2011. She said, "Cancer scars the lives of too many Australians and we know that reducing the smoking rate is one of the most effective ways to reduce the rate of death from this terrible disease." Anti-smoking drug Varenicline (Champix) would also be available for willing quitters.

Cigarette smoke worsens respiratory infections in infants

Studying Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) to learn what puts children at risk for the most severe infections, Washington University researchers at St. Louis Children's Hospital found that a child's age at the time of infection and whether that child lives with a smoker could mean the difference between the sniffles and the intensive care unit.
